Neptune Orbiter Structural Design

Conceptual structural design for a Neptune orbiter — modal, buckling and vibration analysis with MMOD shielding.

Neptune Orbiter
As part of the third year group design project, I designed the structure for a conceptual orbiter mission to Neptune.

Key Details

  • Aluminium 7075 tube frame studied under quasi-static, random vibration, sinusoidal and shock loading.
  • Modal analysis to ensure natural frequencies exceeded Falcon 9 User Guide minimums.
  • Evaluated against Euler buckling, shell buckling and material failure.
  • Multiple truss configurations compared, sweeping tube diameters and thicknesses.
  • MMOD shielding sized for 99% no-penetration probability over a 10-year mission.
