Hovering Bipropellant Rocket

Technical propulsion lead for a 20-second flight, 10-second hover bipropellant rocket hopper at ICLR.

PropulsionBipropellantICLRTest Stand
As technical lead for propulsion in Imperial College London Rocketry (ICLR), I led the design and construction of a small bipropellant rocket hopper — 20 seconds flight, 10 seconds hover.

Key Details

  • Designed and built a concentric tank: nitrous oxide in the outer tank, ethanol in the inner tank.
  • Led mechanical design of structure, plumbing and test stand, plus electronics system design.
  • Nitrogen pressurised with a mechanical regulator, ball valves for throttle, torch igniter.
  • Fully fail-safe: pneumatic shutoff and vent valves, burst disks, tether system.
  • Project paused when the team prioritised the sounding rocket program.
